Greco-Roman All-Tile Mosaic Pool

Greco-Roman All-Tile Mosaic Pool

An all-tile pool

Every surface of this pool — floor, walls, steps, spa and waterline — is covered in hand-cut smalti glass, in blue and gold, with travertine surrounding it.

The acanthus scroll border wraps the entire perimeter: waterline, steps and spa wall. The design draws on ancient Roman bath mosaic, using opus vermiculatum outlining, with tesserae laid to follow the contour of each ornamental form, so the pattern reads as one piece from any angle. For historical reference on Greco-Roman mosaic, see the Getty Museum.

From drawing to water

Every project starts with a detailed hand-drawn rendering showing the exact placement of the acanthus scrollwork and the color palette. Physical tile samples are presented alongside it, so the color can be judged as it will actually look in water before a single piece is cut.

A three-dimensional drawing follows, covering the pool floor and the entrance steps, so the design can be adjusted before construction begins.

Greco-Roman design options

The Greco-Roman tradition covers acanthus leaves, laurel wreaths, key borders, wave scrolls, meander patterns and figurative elements from mythology. Some clients prefer a restrained approach with a single key border and a medallion; others want the full treatment across the whole pool.

How we work

An all-tile pool needs close coordination between mosaic fabrication and pool shell preparation, so we work directly with your pool builder on substrate and bond. Once a project is confirmed we make a custom sample board, so color can be approved before production. Work is mounted paper-faced, never mesh, and arrives in numbered sections keyed to a setting drawing. We fabricate rather than install, and can refer an experienced installer in your region.
