About this mural
A seven-foot hand-cut smalti mural of a Gulf of Mexico bird sanctuary — herons, egrets, pelicans and roseate spoonbills in a marshland setting. It is one of the most complex residential commissions in the portfolio.
It was designed from an original nature painting supplied by the client, scaled to seven feet wide and fabricated entirely in Mexican smalti. Over 40,000 individual tesserae were cut and placed to render the plumage, the water reflections and the marsh vegetation.
It is permanently bonded to the wall with polymer-modified mortar and needs no maintenance for the life of the building. A scaled design rendering is produced for approval before any fabrication begins.
