What is a pool mosaic medallion?
A pool mosaic medallion is a large decorative mosaic set into the floor or wall of a swimming pool. A central design — a crest, a sea creature, a figure, a geometric star — sits inside one or more decorative border rings. It reads clearly from above when the water is still.
Medallion designs
Greco-Roman — Neptune, Poseidon, sea horses, acanthus wreaths and laurel, in the tradition of European estate pools.
Sea life — Dolphins, turtles, manta rays and tropical fish in smalti glass. Each one is drawn and cut for the job.
Family crest and monogram — A family name, initials, or a coat of arms worked into the medallion.
Geometric star — Venetian star patterns in any colorway, from blue and gold to black and white.
Fully custom — We work from your sketch, an inspiration image, or a description.

Custom medallion examples
Every medallion below is one we have built. None of them are stock items and none are held in inventory — each was drawn and cut for a particular pool, at that pool’s diameter. They are here so you have something to point at.
Use the reference to do it. Tell us “M-07” or “the Blue Lily” and we know exactly which one you mean, then we redraw it to your diameter, your palette and your floor. All of them are hand-cut in stone and glass, so the courses follow the drawing rather than a square grid. Installed marks the ones photographed in the pool they were made for; the rest were photographed in the studio before shipping.

Medallions are made to any size. Below roughly three feet a medallion reads as an accent under the water; above six it becomes the floor of the pool. Anything here can be redrawn at any size, and the detail is re-cut to suit — a design shrunk without redrawing loses the pieces that made it work.

Every project begins with a scaled drawing. This one works out a Greek Key border and a wave scroll ring around a laurel band — clients see and approve the full design before a single tile is cut.
How we work
There is no fixed size; a medallion is made as large or as small as the project calls for. Every one starts as a scaled drawing, reviewed with you; fabrication begins only once the design is approved.
The figure is outlined first in opus vermiculatum — tesserae cut and laid to follow its contour — before the surrounding field is filled. It is the technique used in Roman bath mosaics, and it is what gives hand-cut work a sculptural quality no printed or machine-made panel has.
A large piece takes weeks to cut and assemble, and we send photo updates as it goes. The medallion ships paper-faced in numbered sections keyed to a setting drawing. Setting is by a tile contractor.
