Mosaic Borders for Pools and Interiors
Greek key, wave and acanthus borders for waterlines, steps, spas and interiors. Made in our own studio to suit your dimensions and colors.

Made for your project
A mosaic border defines an edge: the waterline, a step, a pool floor or an architectural panel. We develop the pattern around the dimensions, corners and curves of your project.
Browse the examples below and note a reference such as H-17 or B10. These are design starting points, not stocked lengths. We review the scale, colors and layout with your project team before fabrication.

Designing your border

Waterlines, steps & pool floors
At the waterline, the border follows the perimeter beneath the coping. On steps and shelves, it can mark a change in level. On the pool floor, it can frame a medallion or define the main tile field.
The band width, pattern scale and contrast should work together. Share your plans and where the border will go so we can discuss an appropriate layout.
Corners and curves
A repeating pattern needs to meet cleanly at corners and return to its starting point. Curved walls and spa edges also affect how the motif is drawn.
We review these transitions before cutting. Depending on the design, the solution may be a corner motif, an adjusted repeat or a pattern developed around the curve.

Hand-cut borders
Individual pieces are shaped to the drawing, allowing scrolls, leaves and curved motifs to follow the design. Use the H references below when discussing a pattern with the studio.

The classical pattern families
Most borders in use today descend from a handful of Greek and Roman ornament families. Knowing their names is genuinely useful, because each behaves differently once you ask it to turn a corner or follow a curve.
The meander, or Greek key. A single unbroken line folding at right angles. It is the most recognized border in the world and the most rigidly geometric, which makes it superb on straight runs and demanding everywhere else. Its use in Greek and Roman pool design is covered on our Greek pool design page.
The guilloche. Two or more ribbons interlacing into a row of circles, usually with a rosette or an eye set in each. A Roman favorite. Because it is built from curves, it bends around a radius more gracefully than anything orthogonal.
The wave, or Vitruvian scroll. A repeating curled breaker, sometimes called running dog. It has an obvious affinity with water and reads well at a waterline.
The acanthus scroll. A foliate vine, the border equivalent of the Corinthian capital. The most demanding to cut and the most rewarding at scale, because it is the only one of these that can carry real light and shade.
Bead-and-reel, egg-and-dart, rope, chevron, dentil. Narrow, quiet patterns. These are the workhorses, used to separate two fields, to edge a step, or to sit beneath a heavier border as a secondary line.
Planning & delivery
Send the border location, approximate run length, band width and preferred colors. Include your selected design reference and any drawings showing corners, curves or steps.
We discuss the material and layout for the application, then review colors and design details before production.
Ready for your tile setter
Finished mosaics are delivered paper-faced in numbered sections with a keyed layout. Installation is handled by your tile setter or project team.
Production timing depends on the scope and approved design. We confirm the schedule for your project rather than promising a standard turnaround.
