Sailboat Mosaic Mural, Jupiter, Florida

A painting of sails at sea, translated into Byzantine glass for a master bath.
The completed mural in our studio, 58 by 42 inches, before it shipped. The photo is flipped to read the way it hangs.
From a painting to glass
The owners of this house in Jupiter, Florida, had a painting they loved: a row of sails in reds, oranges and golds, reflected in deep blue water. They wanted it as a mosaic on the wall of their master bath, at 58 by 42 inches.
We started with a color board, matching every tone in the painting to Byzantine glass: the reds and oranges of the sails, the violet shadows between them, and a range of blues for the sky and the water.

The painting, and the color board.
Cut and set by hand
Every piece was cut by hand and set to follow the brushstrokes, so the mosaic keeps the movement of the paint. The mural was set in reverse, face down on paper, so the studio photos below show it in reverse. It took about 40 days.

Hand-cut glass following the sail and its reflection.
