Inspired by Van Gogh’s “Afternoon Rest”
This mosaic wall art is based on Vincent van Gogh’s 1890 painting “Noon: Rest from Work (after Millet),” a piece that reflects rural life and quiet human moments. Van Gogh reinterpreted Jean-François Millet’s original composition, adding his own expressive color and movement.
In this mosaic version, we preserved the composition and emotional tone of the original painting while translating it into hand-cut mosaic materials. Every detail—from the resting figures to the surrounding landscape—was carefully recreated to maintain the integrity of the artwork while embracing the texture and depth of mosaic.
Handcrafted Smalti Glass Mosaic Technique
This Van Gogh mosaic wall art was fabricated using traditional Mexican smalti glass, a material known for its rich color variation and reflective qualities. Each piece of glass was hand-cut and placed to mimic the brushstrokes and movement found in Van Gogh’s original work.
Unlike printed reproductions, mosaic artwork requires interpreting the painting into thousands of individual pieces. The direction, spacing, and color transitions must all be carefully planned so the final piece captures both the visual and emotional essence of the original.
Custom Framed Mosaic Wall Art Installation
The finished mosaic mural was installed within a custom metal frame fabricated by a local artisan studio. The frame not only protects the artwork but also enhances its presentation, allowing it to function as both fine art and architectural design.

About this piece
A hand-cut smalti recreation of Van Gogh’s 1890 Afternoon Rest (after Millet), fabricated by Joe Ureña and the studio team. A piece at this scale and fidelity takes thousands of individually cut pieces, each shaped to follow the directional brushwork of the original.
Van Gogh translates unusually well to mosaic. The opus vermiculatum technique — laying tesserae in flowing lines that follow the contour of a form — mirrors his own brushstrokes almost exactly.
It was fabricated in Mexican smalti, the same material used in Byzantine mosaic for 1,500 years. The hand-poured surface catches light at slightly different angles across the piece, which is the luminosity no print reproduces. The palette was matched to the original painting using over 60 distinct glass colors.
