Cliffside Mosaic Pool and Spa, St. Thomas

A round pool and spa on the rocks above the Caribbean, with sea turtles in the glass.

The finished pool and spa, above the surf.

On the rocks above the sea

This pool sits on a rock ledge on St. Thomas, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, with the sea breaking directly below. It is two circles: the pool, and a smaller spa set one level down. Both are covered inside and out in a deep blue blend of vitreous glass.

Sea turtles swim through the glass: a large one on the pool wall at the waterline and smaller ones across the floor, so they read from the terrace above and from the water.

Glass for sun and salt air

Vitreous glass is non-porous and colorfast, so the blue holds up to tropical sun, salt air and pool chemistry. The blend of several blues keeps the surface alive as the light moves across it.

Made in our studio, shipped to the island

The mosaic was made in our own studio, paper-faced in numbered sections and shipped to St. Thomas ready for the tile setter. Caribbean commissions get the same drawings, samples and progress photographs as any other project, and freight to the island is quoted with the mosaic.
